Basic Computer Skills Tutor – Pietermaritzburg

I am a patient and detail-oriented Basic Computer Skills Tutor based in Pietermaritzburg. I focus on helping adult learners, job seekers, and small business employees develop practical, usable computer skills in a supportive one-on-one or small-group environment.

My Approach to Teaching

I believe that digital literacy is no longer optional — it is essential for employment, business efficiency, and everyday life. However, many people have never received formal computer training or have lacked the opportunity to learn at their own pace. My role is to bridge that gap. While I do not hold a formal instructor certification, I bring something that is equally valuable in practical learning environments: the ability to explain technical concepts in simple language, repeat and rephrase information without judgment, and adapt lessons to suit each learner’s needs and pace.

My teaching style is structured but flexible. I first assess each learner’s current ability, then create a practical learning plan focused on exactly what they need — whether that involves typing a professional letter, creating a simple budget in Excel, or sending an email with an attachment.

What I Teach

I provide basic to lower-intermediate computer training in the following areas:
Microsoft Word
• Creating, formatting, and saving documents
• Writing letters, invoices, and basic reports
• Using basic formatting tools
Microsoft Excel
• Data entry
• Simple formulas (addition, subtraction, averages)
• Creating basic stock lists, expense trackers, and budgets
Email Management
• Sending and receiving emails
• Opening and attaching files
• Organising and managing emails
File Management
• Creating folders
• Saving and locating documents
• Using USB drives and managing files
Internet Skills
• Searching for information online
• Navigating websites
• Completing online forms safely and confidently

I do not teach advanced programming, graphic design, or complex database systems. My focus is on building strong foundational digital skills for beginners.

Who I Work With

My lessons are suitable for:
• Adults who missed basic computer training and feel left behind
• Job seekers who want to improve their computer literacy and confidence
• Small business employees who need help with everyday computer tasks such as invoicing, record keeping, and stock management
• Older individuals who want to communicate online, use email, and access online services
Lesson Format and Rates

I offer on-site tutoring at the learner’s home or workplace within Pietermaritzburg. I currently do not offer online lessons.

• Individual lessons: R150 per hour
• Small groups (2–5 people): R120 per hour (total group rate, shared among participants)
• First lesson: Complimentary (one hour, no obligation)

Travel costs are kept minimal by working within a reasonable distance of the Pietermaritzburg CBD.

My Commitment to Learners

I take my role as an educator seriously. I arrive on time, prepare each lesson in advance, and provide simple written notes after each session for learners to keep. I do not rush lessons, and I never make students feel uncomfortable for asking basic questions.

My success is not measured by certificates issued, but by whether my learners gain the confidence and ability to complete tasks independently after our sessions. Read less

I then break complex tasks into small, repeatable steps, using guided practice and real-world examples relevant to the student's work or daily life. I provide written summaries after each lesson for reinforcement. My standard is simple: the student leaves able to perform the task independently.
