Matei tutored me in thermodynamics. This was my second time taking the class; I failed with a 3.7 last year. Matei was a wonderful tutor and very patient. He met me where I was at and started from the basics to identify my personal pitfalls and learning style. His focus is not on walking you through specific problems step by step, but instead on helping you to think and set up problems like a physicist. For me, this approach to tutoring was hugely helpful in building a far more intuitive understanding of the subject, which I could carry over to novel or unfamiliar problems. I'm happy to report that this year, I was able to finish the class with an 8 overall :)
Working with Matei was an excellent experience. Getting started was quick and hassle-free, and within just 9 hours of tutoring, I was able to master key physics concepts that had seemed out of reach even after a year in school. I really valued his patience and dedication to ensuring I fully understood everything. He also provided plenty of homework, materials, and visual notes from each session, which greatly strengthened my learning. Overall, the experience was highly productive, and I’d give him a 10/10—highly recommended for anyone seeking a tutor.
I’m pleased to recommend my former tutor, Matei Sura, whose guidance had a remarkable impact on my progress in math and physics. When I first started, I struggled with even basic concepts and often felt lost during lessons, but Matei completely changed that. With patient support, clear explanations, and lessons tailored to my needs, Matei made complex topics easy to understand and learning far more engaging. As a result, I not only grasped classroom material more effectively but also gained real confidence in handling difficult problems. This progress was reflected in my exam results, where I achieved some of the highest scores I’ve ever received. Without a doubt, Matei’s outstanding teaching and dedication played a key role in my academic improvement.
I usually teach Bachelor and high-school level physics, covering anything from Mechanics, Electromagnetism, to Waves and Optics.
My best trick for building intuition is analogies. Whether it's movement or geometry or water flow, I try to map difficult concepts to simple things students can imagine and easily remember for their exams. I also ask a lot of questions along the way to pin down where confusion arises and make sure the student understands before we can move on.
I have yet to have a student who does not struggle with physics. Physics is hard, period. Everyone is at their own level, and the most important skill I teach my students is being ok with not knowing, staying calm, and making baby steps until they understand the material.
Before we start, I ask my students to send over the syllabus and any other relevant documents, and we always have a short call to discuss learning needs based on the curriculum.
We start by tackling concrete problems to scan for strengths and weaknesses in the understanding of the material, and by checking for how confident the student feels with different topics. Taken together, these 2 provide me with the right mix between teaching the theory and practicing with questions, although I try to keep the theory as short and concrete as possible; instead, I focus on bulding skills and confidence by solving problems.
I never stick only to the material. I tell stories about how ideas were developed, who were the people who developed them, what the historical context looked like. On the concrete side, I talk about applications of the conceps in technology and economy, as well as interesting developments in modern science. For me, education should be a positive experience, not dull exam passing.
