My style is to start with what the students know rather than what they don’t. This base is the first square we fill and gives confidence and security. From there we spread out like a tree to show that knowledge is linked up and we organise new material into distinct groups that are the placed onto the correct branches of the tree. Visually, this pattern builds to reflect and illustrate the concepts covered and hopefully retained by the students. This natural map is available to all students and permits good working between them as any errors can be wiped away by reference to the matrix style tree diagramme. I have been a classroom teacher for over 16 years with children, adolescents and “grown ups” in industry.
