I have been involved in mathematics education for 40 years: 15 years as high school mathematics teacher and 25 years as university lecturer in mathematics education. I am based in Stellenbosch. I am passionate about mathematics and its teaching, and love to share this with students. My teaching approach is geared towards enabling students to understand and enjoy mathematics, to be problem solvers, rather than on rote learning and following procedures devoid of meaning.

Naomi received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Pre-medical studies at American University, where she was a teacher assistant for advanced Chemistry. She has also mentored middle school students for years in preparation for their science fair projects. After her undergraduate experience, she spent three years conducting research at Harvard Medical School on Alzheimer’s disease. Next she completed her Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she researched fMRI in neurodevelopmental disorder patients. Naomi is motivated to meet students where they are at and prepare lesson plans according to their learning styles. She is passionate about helping students find their own voice through writing and help students study more efficiently. Additionally, she likes to provide helpful tips for successful test taking and staying organized. She offers online and in person sessions.

I am a double Master Student ( Master of Commerce and Master in Management). I have more than 8 years of teaching experience. I teach Maths, Science, Geography, History, Politics, Economics, Management, Finance & Accountancy. I started my tutoring career in 2010. Since then I taught more than 100 students who are still in contact with me for my advice and suggestion for a future career. I am not just a tutor to them but a guide. I love teaching students because I feel that I can understand children and teenagers while teaching them. Because they need an expert to give advise them, they need a friend to listen to them. I have been told by many students that I make learning fun. I appreciate that they feel that way but I don't really agree. I think learning itself is fun and I just help students to see that. I take great satisfaction in watching students feel proud of themselves as they master a topic that had been challenging for them. I want students to see the joy they can take in learning. After having taught at the collegiate level for over 20 years (I taught philosophy, religious studies, humanities, and English), at, among other places, one of the best honors colleges in the country (I taught numerous students who went on to become Rhodes Scholars), I taught mathematics at the secondary level for the last three years. Now I want to be a stay-at-home dad while still keeping a foot in education, since I truly have a passion for it and have devoted my professional life to it. I enjoy working with all students but I especially want to encourage athletes. I taught many student athletes (some who have gone on to the NFL) and I was also the long distance track coach at my previous school and enjoy running myself. I appreciate the discipline it takes to excel in athletics and academics.

I earned a masters in teaching mathematics at the secondary level in 2018, specializing in diversifying instruction to meet diverse learning needs. If you hate math, I'm your teacher. I have an extensive background in art, music, physics and many unusual life experiences that allow me to relate the many ways that math makes life more beautiful, more powerful, and more amazing! Math has a bad reputation but in my experience, the right attitude, the right teacher, and the right applications make all the difference. I teach solving systems of linear equations by racing remote controlled cars, quadratic equations with catapults, statistics with cookie stacking contests, and geometry with patterns and design. Mathematics is the language of the universe, and once you learn to speak it, you will begin to see it everywhere. Becoming better at math won't only raise your grades, either; learning how to use logic, solve problems, balance equations, draw angles and connect ideas will strengthen your mind in general and make you a better thinker overall. Like working out in a gym makes your whole body stronger, practicing mathematics will make your whole brain smarter and more efficient, whether or not you think you'll ever use it in "real life." You don't go to the gym to become an awesome leg-lifter; but strengthening your legs makes you better at everything that uses legs. Likewise, learning math strengthens your brain and makes you better at everything that uses it! I have a soft spot for people with math anxiety, learning challenges, behavioral issues, and diverse needs. There are many, many ways to teach and learn math, but most schools are limited to a few spread across a large class. In tutoring, I can tailor my teaching to meet your specific needs.
