Using songs and rhythms is also crucial for learning; lessons that include audio tools and recordings offer an advantage. Exposing a child to cartoons on television or other multimedia helps to improve oral and listening skills. However, the focus in Mandarin is not only on reading and speaking. It is essential that the learner also acquires writing skills, starting with basic strokes. They should be encouraged to write with a pencil, and sometimes practice calligraphy. Basic strokes are taught in their simplest techniques, and the child can begin with simpler characters until they have memorized the correct sequence.
