This can be done through various ways such as real life applications or explaining a concept using analogies. After understanding, practice is definitely required especially for subjects such as Math so I believe in independent work done to check for understanding and internalization. I make and provide smart notes for students as a summary and a checklist for concepts taught and internalized by them. This helps students who are struggling as they are able to focus on their misconceptions and effectively work on them.
