Q: What level of Japanese proficiency do you teach, and do you specialize in any particular aspect of the language (e.g., speaking, writing, listening, reading)?

I teach beginner and intermediate Japanese. I specialize in speaking and listening, given my experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, which demand skills in both areas.

Q: What resources do you use to teach Japanese, and how do you integrate technology into your instruction?

For grammar, I use みんなの日本語 series for systematic guidance. As for speaking and listening, although there are textbook resources in the みんなの日本語 series as well, I prefer customizing the online resources, e.g. YouTube videos, animes, etc, based on the student's individual interests.

Q: What kind of homework or practice assignments do you assign, and how do you ensure that students understand the material?

For speaking-related, I try to combine it with the student's personal interest, e.g. his/her favorite TV show, etc, and create relevant learning activities accordingly. They can be in written form, audio recording, or live presentation in class. I ask for feedback weekly to see if the homwork's level of difficulty is appropriate.

Q: How do you help students overcome language barriers or communication difficulties?

By sparking their interests in the lanuage in daily life.

Q: How do you teach the nuances of Japanese culture and customs, and how important is this aspect of language learning?

Those who know a bit about the country will know about its honne vs tatemae(real intention vs politeness) culture, which is highly delicate and contrasts greatly with western languages & cultures. I would be happy to share senarios I experienced myself as an interpreter/boarding school student who lived with Japanese people for 4 years, or we can watch relevant videos together. Japanese, being a high-context language, has a lot of such nuances.

Q: What is your approach to teaching grammar, and how do you make it engaging for students?

Systematic learning using with the help of textbooks, as well as practice---lots of practice.

Q: How do you incorporate speaking and listening practice into lessons?

I would try to teach in the language as much as the student would understand it (or in a gradual manner as the student advances), and encourage the student to answer them using the sentence structures they learned.

Q: How do you help students build vocabulary, and what strategies do you use?

In general, I try to encourage students to engage with the language in their daily lives based on their interests and hobbies, and build their vocanularies from there. Then we can start looking into work, etc, in areas that they might need their vocabularies in. A special bonus If they are Chinese or Korean speakers, because I also would share about a special method I used myself (you'll find out if you enroll!)

Q: How do you help students improve their pronunciation and intonation?

We will talk about them and analyse them in class, I will also give constructive feedback. Relevant homework related to shadowing will also be arranged based on the student's needs.
