It really depends on the students needs and preferences. I would prefer graphs and mind maps (Lucid) as it is my way of learning. However, resources can be as diversed as books, podcasts, websites, videos, drawings, written lessons... I like to use an online shared place as lessons planner (Notion, Google drive) where both materials and ressources are shared from my part as well as student's homework or papers he wants to study, needs and questions. Lessons notes are stored on this shared space. However, I would be very pleased to work with any app or website already used by the student.
Speaking and listening are included in the whole lesson as we will exchange as much as we can in French. Listening would be also present with the audios and videos I may use during my lesson. Writing and reading will be used depending on the lesson, the student learning methods and aims. For example, handwriting is not used a lot in my lessons unless it is the student's way of remembering things.
The main practice exercise I would offer is a list of the words we have seen in the previous lesson and others I find important. Those words would be contained in an app (Quizlet) and the student can play with those words in order to memorize them. I can also share podcasts or videos or lend books if I have. The lesson recap is available at any time on the shared space and questions can be exchanges through this space or via private messages.
I mainly use comparison with english words that could be pronounced in the same way, as well as mnemonic technique creating links with already known things and sounds. As we exchange orally in the lessons, I encourage students to hear and try to repeat, using phonetic way of writting especially if the aim is only to level up in oral conversation. Another important point is to get used to hear french language, listening regularly conversations through podcasts or videos, with different french accents.
French grammar and vocabulary are hard because each rule is followed by lots of exceptions. I love to explain why the rules are like this, or the words are written like that, thanks to latine etymology for example, or easy sentences to remember in order to keep in mind the context linked to some special word's uses. Using drawings and mnemonic techniques can help too. However, I mainly adapt to the student learning style.
This is the main point of my tutoring methodology. The first times, I'll ask you to teach me how you think and memorize. I'll check from a lesson to another, asking you what you have remembered easily, which ways of teaching correspond the best to you... I love to be challenged by different learning styles in order to learn different teaching styles and be able to adapt in any situations.
I do not provide additional resources but I would be pleased to learn cantonese so if someone can give me lessons on this language I would be pleased to give free french lessons in exchange.
