منهجية التدريس

My approach to math teaching is to identify the gaps in the student's understanding and fill them in order to build upon the work from where they start.

أسئلة لك

Q: What teaching methods do you use to help students learn Math concepts and solve problems?

I always start by finding out what the student already knows and then identify the gaps in her knowledge and understanding. I unpack concepts so that they are fully understood initially and then help learners to practise and apply the new knowledge. I prefer not to rely on quick hacks that are taught by rote!

Q: Do you have experience with online teaching platforms or virtual tutoring, and what is your preferred method of communication with students?

I have done virtual tutoring in various contexts and I make use of the platform to share visual material and to look at the student's answers. I still prefer seeing the students in person whenever possible.

Q: What Math topics or concepts are you particularly skilled in teaching, and how do you keep up to date with changes in the curriculum?

I am particularly strong in algebra, calculus, functions, all the geometries and trigonometry. I have kept up with curriculum changes, particularly in South Africa (CAPS, IEB, Cambridge), for the past twenty years by attending conferences, talking to colleagues, training teachers and writing for textbooks.

Q: How do you communicate with parents about their child's progress and any challenges they may be facing in learning Math?

I keep contact with parents using Whatsapp and phoning them to let them know how their children are progressing and how the parents can support them.

Q: Do you provide any additional resources or materials to supplement your lessons, such as practice exercises or online tutorials?

Always. I have a store of online materials that I use and I keep them updated and adapted according to the students I am working with. I also ensure that whatever exercises I give students, I also do the exercises and provide a memo for them to work through after attempting the exercise.

Q: What is your approach to homework assignments, and how do you ensure students understand the concepts covered in class?

I make a plan with the student to ensure complete coverage of what they need before an upcoming assessment. I pace the homework assignments to match the progress of the student. Closer to exam time, the student practises the experience of sitting a full three hour exam (if that is what is required), in order to improve their exam strategies.

Q: What steps do you take to ensure that your teaching approach is compatible with the student's learning style?

I meet the student where they are at, rather than imposing my style on them. I ensure that the student feels comfortable with me and can ask and check in with me at any point in the learning process. I make use of visual explanations all the time.

Q: Do you have experience working with students with learning disabilities or special needs, and how do you adapt your teaching methods to accommodate their needs?

Yes I have some experience with this. My approach is to slow down to the pace of the student, check in with what is not understood, allow the student to explain ideas and concepts back to me at every chance. I provide a safe and encouraging space.
