My name is Olivia, and I am currently a PhD student at UC Davis, studing environmental engineering. My work focuses on biological treatment of trace organic contaminants (e.g. pesticides) in water. I have two years of experience as a teaching assistant for undergraduates, and am knowledgable in many interconnected areas such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and ecology. I am passionate about making learning spaces comfortable and accessible for students of all backgrounds. I have a Bachelors degree in Biochemistry as well as an MSc, both obtained in top universities in Ireland. I obtained my teaching qualification in the UK and have been teaching in Bahrain for 4 years. I have experience teaching the British, American and IB curriculums. I grew up in New York and worked at a zoo throughout high school, where I developed a keen interest in animal behavior and the life sciences. I attended Cornell University, where I studied neurobiology and evolutionary biology. I then came to Hong Kong, where I worked as an ecologist and later completed my PhD at the University of Hong Kong in public health and virology. I continue to work in Hong Kong as a postdoctoral fellow, conducting research related to infection and immunology. My range of experiences has highlighted the interconnectedness between the many fields of biology and life sciences. I can readily draw examples and comparisons to aid in teaching new subject matter, as well as to build strong foundations across the sciences.
