Teaching writing to young students is all about sparking their imagination, helping them express their thoughts clearly, and having fun with words! Here's how I do it: First we explore the writing journey: We'll take an adventure through brainstorming ideas, putting them down on paper, and then polishing them up until they shine through scaffolded planning templates. I model writing examples: I'll share exciting stories and examples to help you understand different types of writing, like stories, letters, and poems. We'll learn how to organise our thoughts and make our writing easy to follow. We do it together: Co-constructing writing together is an important step of the writing journey. Your Turn: I will still be here to help structure writing however now my job will be to give you feedback to help you make your writing even better. We'll work together to fix any mistakes and make sure your ideas sparkle on the page. We're a writing team: We'll share our stories with each other, give friendly advice, and cheer each other on. Writing is more fun when we do it together!
I use fun and engaging multimodal approaches to teach these skills explicitly depending on students' individual goals. I can assertain areas needed for further improvement from student writing samples, reading data or parent requests.
My approach to teaching reading revolves around fostering a deep understanding of the text, rather than just decoding words. I prioritise creating a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore various texts and express their thoughts. To improve reading comprehension skills, I employ a variety of strategies tailored to individual student needs. These may include: Pre-reading activities to activate prior knowledge and build anticipation. Guided reading sessions where we focus on developing fluency, understanding vocabulary, context, and main ideas. Encouraging active reading habits such as annotating, summarizing, and asking questions. Engaging discussions to encourage critical thinking and interpretation of the text. Providing opportunities for independent reading and regular practice to reinforce skills. By combining these methods, I aim to equip students with the tools and confidence to comprehend and analyse texts effectively.
I help students with literary analysis and critical thinking skills by guiding them through close reading of texts, prompting them to ask probing questions, analyse themes, and evaluate characters' motivations. Through discussions, writing assignments, and activities, I encourage them to articulate their interpretations, consider different perspectives, and develop reasoned arguments supported by evidence from the text.
I help students with pronunciation and enunciation by providing clear examples, practicing phonetic exercises, and offering individualised feedback. We focus on specific sounds and techniques, using repetition and practice to improve accuracy and clarity in spoken English. Developing reading fluency within reading even the most simple of texts is another approach to developing their pronunciation and enunciation.
I have strong passion for public speaking and presenting, having had formal training throughout highschool and beyond. I help my students with public speaking and presentation skills by providing guidance on organisation, delivery, and confidence-building techniques. We work on structuring presentations effectively and practicing speaking with clarity and poise. Through constructive feedback and rehearsal, students gain confidence and develop the skills needed to engage and captivate their audience.
Absolutely! Complex English grammar rules can often be simplified for easier understanding. Working with Primary aged students the majority of my career has enabled me to break things down to be easily understood. I also provide many opportunities to practise before moving onto other concepts to ensure consolidaiton of skills taught.
This is all about personality and connecting through building relationships. Of course there any many games we can play too, however, usually kids will always learn best from someone they like, connect with and feel comfortable with. As a classroom teacher, this is always the goal and I build very strong and safe relationships with my students.
