My approach to teaching writing begins with exploring strong examples of the type of writing we're focusing on. I guide students to analyze these models and understand the key features. Then, I support them in creating their own version by first modelling the writing together, and gradually encouraging them to write independently. I always encourage creativity and imagination, but also help them stay within the structure and purpose of the task. This balance helps students develop both confidence and clarity in their writing.
I take a continuous, consistent approach to teaching grammar, spelling, and punctuation...it’s a non-negotiable part of every lesson. Much of this is reinforced through regular reading practice, which naturally builds awareness of correct language use. I also encourage students to identify and correct their own mistakes, as well as edit and improve the work of others. This not only sharpens their technical skills but also builds a stronger sense of responsibility and attention to detail in their writing.
I believe daily reading is key to building strong comprehension skills. I start by choosing texts that match the student’s interests to get them engaged, and then gradually introduce more challenging and diverse reading materials. This helps expand their vocabulary and understanding over time. Each reading session is followed by carefully chosen comprehension questions that develop key skills like inference, retrieval, summarising, and understanding vocabulary in context.
I help students build literary analysis and critical thinking skills through thought-provoking comprehension and higher-order thinking questions. We don’t just look at what happens in a text, but explore why it happens, how it’s written, and what it means. I also encourage students to make real-life connections to the themes and characters, which helps them think more deeply and critically about what they’re reading.
I use live examples and regular listening activities to help students hear and understand correct pronunciation. We practice speaking together, focusing on clear enunciation and stress patterns. Listening to native speakers through audio clips or videos also helps students develop an ear for the language, and I guide them to repeat, mimic, and practice until they gain confidence and clarity in their speech.
I use fun and engaging activities like storytelling, loud reading, speech games, and memorising short pieces to build students’ confidence in public speaking. These activities help them practice voice projection, clarity, and expression in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Over time, they become more comfortable speaking in front of others and learn how to organise and deliver their ideas clearly and confidently.
