I like to first get a sense of where the student is at by having a relaxed conversation with the student. We discuss their general outlook on their academics. After getting a sense of how they relate to their academics, we start the real work. This could either be tackling questions and past papers (especially if they are someone with knowledge but test anxiety) or we do a back-to-basics analysis of the course and start from there.
