Questions for You

Q: What is your approach to teaching writing, and how do you help students develop their writing skills?

For writing tasks, I typically break it down into four main components: (1) Organization, genre and structure; (2) Argumentation, clarity and logic, (3) Language, grammar and diction; (4) Substantiation and development. I identify students' prowness in each of these sections to develop strategies to hone their strengths and improve their weaknesses.

Q: How do you help students with grammar, spelling, and punctuation?

Comprehension of grammar rules, then practice and review.

Q: What is your approach to teaching reading, and how do you help students improve their reading comprehension skills?

How to understand a text from its genre, structure, hints (e.g. title, description), comprehension questions and language used

Q: How do you help students with literary analysis and critical thinking skills?

For general English sessions, depending on the goals of the student, we will go through literary passages annotating and understanding the arguments or ideas presented. There will also be questions to ascertain the level of comprehension of the student, including any specific literary devices utilized. Critical thinking is developed from writing and generating arguments on various topics.

Q: How do you help students with pronunciation and enunciation?

We learn correct pronunciation and improve intonation through reading passages and correcting during verbal communication or presentations.

Q: How do you help students with public speaking or presentation skills?

My sessions are always tutee-centered, which means that I try to address any concerns or difficulties that the tutee has through tailoring my approach, rather than run lessons in a one-size-fits-all manner. For presentation and communication skills, I will first identify their weaknesses - e.g. pitch, clarity, brainstorming, before going through sessions complete with mock presentations (their target setting - e.g. classroom/ business) and shorter conversational style discussions to boost their confidence (e.g. discussing recent news).

Q: Can you explain complex English grammar rules in simpler terms for easier understanding?

I have personalized handouts with examples to guide students in their understanding. I also use popular grammar textbooks (either provided by student or myself).

Q: How do you motivate students who struggle with the language?

A lot of encouragement.

Q: Are you familiar with the English curriculum and course requirements at my school?

I am familiar with the local HKDSE curriculum (5** 2020 HKDSE) and the EFL, ESL and English Literature IGCSE curriculum (A* 2018 IGCSE).

Q: How do you help students prepare for English exams and assignments?

I identify the mode of exam that they are targeting (HKDSE, IGCSE, IELTS, university) or any task prompts for the assignment.

Q: How do you ensure that students are actively engaged during tutoring sessions?

I always encourage a proactive learning approach rather than spoonfeeding, which ensures that students are engaged and inovlved during the session.

Q: Can you help with test-taking strategies for English exams?

Yes

Q: Are you willing to provide additional practice problems or resources for independent study?

Yes

Q: Are you able to provide assistance with English language certification exams, such as TOEFL or IELTS?

I am experienced in coaching students for IELTS. Having taken IELTS again recently in March 2025, I obtained a 9.0 score for the speaking component with an overall band score of 9.0.

Q: Can you provide guidance on choosing appropriate reading materials for improving English language skills?

Yes

Q: How do you help students with business English skills, such as writing professional emails or conducting meetings in English?

Yes. As a law graduate wtih multiple internships in different indsutries (corporate, regulator, law firm, NGO), I am familiar with business writing and presentations.

Q: How do you help students with understanding and applying literary devices in English literature?

Yes, I obtained a 5* in HKDSE Literature in English (2020) and A* in IGCSE (2018).

Q: How do you encourage students to pursue their own writing interests in English?

I share my own story as an avid reader and writer, and encourage them to write about the topics or genres that they are interested in.
