I believe writing is an expression of an individual's voice: it is their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Due to this belief, it is imperative that the student that I am tutoring develops their own voice in their writing, whether academic or otherwise. I am interested in helping students express their ideas and opinions in a constructive and influential way. I assist students in developing their ideas by asking questions that will help them determine how they are feeling about a particular subject, and why. This gives students the confidence to argue their point, write their ideas down and share them with their peers.
Grammar, spelling and punctuation are all guided by a set of rules, like any other subject. Learning these rules will happen through deliberate and systematic application and repetition. Introduction to new ideas consistently as well as revisiting learned ideas will help solidify the information.
My approach to teaching reading is to help students work smarter and not harder. Often there are clues telling us the answer to most reading questions. I help students use those context clues to read and analyze different materials. Further, I help student isolate their ideas and express them later through answering questions and writing exercises.
Literary analysis and critical thinking are creative endeavors. Analyzing text may seem tedious; however, the truth is that this is where students can express their own ideas. Often the author has a broader message in their writing that should be identified, and through question asking and brainstorming, we can find the answer together. Here students will have the opportunity to think critically about what they've analyzed and form opinions based on the real world.
Pronunciation and enunciation are verbal skills that need to be practiced for memorization. Finding different and engaging ways of introducing sound to students and connecting that sound with letters and words is how I would tutor this subject. This way, both the verbal and visual parts of the brain are working together and making connections that the student will remember.
Public speaking and presentation skills are essential for success in the future. Oftentimes students become nervous because they feel unprepared, or are worried about what others may think or say. I would prepare students by building their confidence in the subject, practicing with them, asking them potential tough questions that may come up, and generally being a respectful audience member for someone learning a new skill. This way students will understand there is nothing to fear about presenting their well-thought out ideas.
Yes, I would happily explain grammar rules in a way that makes sense to an English learner at any level. Rules can be simplified, broken down into parts, and learned individually, one by one. This would be my approach for a complex English grammar ruleset.
I would express my passion for language! I am currently learning Spanish and I would share my love of language with students. It is essential for students to be able to express themselves and language is a major way that humans do this. Developing language skills will build a more confident student who is prepared to share their ideas.
I have worked in an after school tutoring program for several years, and can attest that being aware of school requirements is essential to success. It is imperative that the tutoring session follow the ideas and rules that a student's teacher has laid out. The curriculum will act as a guide for our sessions.
I would first look at what the curriculum requires and assess how prepared the student is. Then, any areas we need to work on will take priority. I would also ask potential questions that would be on the exam, help with any study guides available, or prepare a study guide for the student myself.
Asking questions throughout the session ensures the student is following along and understanding the material. Body language and verbal cues also indicate whether a student is engaged. I would re-engage a student that was feeling disconnected by taking a break and trying again.
I can definitely help with test taking stategies. Often careful reading, analysis of the question, and context clues will help. Further, there are general test-taking skills that apply to any subject that I will impart.
Yes! Sometimes the curriculum does not provide every resource that a student needs to learn. Due to the fact that I would have a personal knowledge of the students strengths and areas of improvement, I would be happy to tailor a practice resource for independent study.

Yes, finding a subject matter of interest at an appropriate reading level is important. Something too complex leads to frustration, and something too simple leads to disengagement. I would happily provide guidance on materials I think would be useful in impoving English language skills.
I have personally worked as the manager of a small tutoring company for several years, and can help students write professionally and express themselves confidently in a business meeting, as I have first-hand experience.
Literary devices enrich the writing of those who use them. I would first have a student understand how great writers have used these tools, what these tools are, and the impact they make in writing. Then, I would practice with my student so they could try their hand at using different literary devices to express themselves.
I just love sharing my passion for English, writing, and language in general. My hope is that students realize that language is a tool for them to use to enrich their lives and build their confidence, and allow them to navigate the world in a new way. I would show them the ways writing has helped my life and why developing, writing, and defending thier ideas is important. Then hopefully students will be eager to continue!
