My approach focuses on building writing skills step by step. I begin by assessing the student's current level and identifying strengths and weaknesses. I teach planning, structure, vocabulary development, sentence variety, and editing techniques while providing model examples. Students regularly practise different writing styles, including descriptive, narrative, persuasive, analytical, and formal writing. I provide detailed feedback and encourage students to reflect on and improve their own work so they gradually become more independent writers.
I teach grammar, spelling, and punctuation through a combination of direct instruction, guided practice, and application within writing tasks. Rather than simply correcting mistakes, I explain why a rule exists and provide opportunities for students to apply it repeatedly. I use exercises, games, worksheets, and editing activities to reinforce learning and ensure students can transfer these skills into their own writing.
I teach reading by helping students actively engage with texts rather than passively reading them. We focus on vocabulary, inference, summarising, identifying main ideas, and understanding the author's purpose. I use questioning techniques that encourage students to support their answers with evidence from the text and gradually develop higher-level comprehension and analytical skills.
I teach students how to move beyond simply identifying techniques and instead explain their effects. We examine language choices, themes, character development, symbolism, structure, and writer's intentions.
