I usually set up homework assignments based on exercises containing key theoretical concepts. This allows for the student to go through both theory and solve complex problems.
Prior to engaging in full on tutoring session, I tend to learn more about the student's way of working out problems. This allows to me to come up with the most adapted teaching approach to that particular student.
Although I have never had the opportunity of working with special need student, I do believe I could learn from the experience of attempting to doing so. I am a very patient parson.
