My name is Evariste Umba. I hold a Master's in Chemistry from the University of Cape Town, the first African University, and I am currently a PhD candidate at a university in Johannesburg. I have over 5 years of experience teaching chemistry, starting from my second year of my BSc studies where I began teaching my classmates. I was considered the best student by my analytical professor and taught at the University during my master's studies. Additionally, I have assisted private students in grades 10-12 and first year at the University. My teaching method involves providing practical examples and simulating test/exam conditions to help students succeed. I am based in Johannesburg but prefer online tutorials. I qualified with an Honours degree in Chemistry from Southampton University in 1985 before proceeding to Durham University for my PhD in synthetic organic chemistry with electrochemistry. After several years doing polymer research in British Industry, I switched to the area of patents, gaining a scholarship to do so, before graduating from Queen Mary and Westfield College with a Masters in the Management of IP law. I then qualified as an Australian and New Zealand Patent and Trade Mark Attorney (I moved abroad) and was responsible for all of my employer's chemical patent portfolio. Having spent years training fresh graduates in areas of IP law to get them through the qualifying exams, I am now looking to wind down my career as a Patent Attorney and to move back into chemistry full time as a tutor to train up the next generation and essentially anyone who is struggling.
