Hello! My name is Mariella, and I'm from South Africa. I now live in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong. I am bilingual in English and Afrikaans, but I can also speak and understand basic French, Italian, Dutch, and Flemish. I studied Ba. Humanities with majors in Sociology, Psychology, and French. During my time as a student, I began by tutoring first-year French, which I thoroughly enjoyed. After graduating from university, I provided private English tutoring to a family in France and then to a family in Italy. I am TELF certified. Teaching and tutoring English to young children brings me great joy. My approach involves teaching through play. By engaging in play and interacting with children, while creating an English-speaking environment, I find that they develop a greater desire to learn. I strive to act more like an older sister (with whom they can only speak English) and less like a traditional teacher. Additionally, I enjoy helping adults build confidence in their conversational English skills. Understanding how challenging it can be to learn a new language, I focus on making learning sessions social and interactive. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I attended DGS until 9th grade and then moved to Boston to attend a private prep school. During my high school years, I assisted teachers during after-school programs at a local elementary school. I also taught ESL English at the Chinatown community center. At Columbia University, I studied Art History and Psychology which allowed me to further hone my critical reading and writing skills. I continued to tutor elementary and middle school kids in English and other subjects during my Columbia career.
