Teaching more than just Economics - how it all fits together from history to sustainability.

A good economist is a historian, philosopher, ecologist, sociologist, psychologist, scientist, and even a little bit of a businessperson. Economics is an imperfect discipline, but ... 続きを読む

I want students to obviously learn, but I want that learning to be enjoyable. If students are dreading my lessons or not at least a bit enthusiastic about them, then I've failed an... 続きを読む

あなたへの質問

Q: How do you ensure that learners are prepared for standardized exams or assessments in economics?

As an examiner, I know exactly what the assessment objectives are. Teaching this to students is the first step if they don't know this. The next is to give feedback on written work which is essential to score highly in economics assignments. As part of the feedback process I'll highlight which part of the AOs were achieved and provide concrete guidance for improvement, including models to show students what say an A or an A* answer looks like.

Q: How do you incorporate ethical considerations into your lessons when teaching economic theories and concepts?

Respect for the existence of all peoples underlies my teaching. The only intolerance is of the intolerant. This is known as the paradox of tolerance - see Karl Popper.

Q: How do you ensure that learners are able to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in the training to their personal or professional lives?

Critical thinking is what good education teaches. Not criticism for the sake of criticism but learning how to make good arguments and weigh conflicting reasons. That's the most important life lesson economics teaches.

Q: What are some of the current economic issues that you are particularly passionate about and how do you incorporate them into your lessons?

Climate change affecting prices and scarcity is a frequent topic I incorporate. Trade wars have also become important as has the war in Ukraine to some extent. Other political issues are also discussed as these always have economic implications.

Q: What is your policy on providing guidance on career paths or further education opportunities in economics?

No solid policy. Ask me about it.

Q: What is the expected duration of the training and how many sessions will be required?

This depends entirely on the student. Most students decide to have lessons with me up until their final exams, but if a student just wants a couple of classes to review something I'm happy to provide that if my schedule allows.

Q: How do you incorporate local or regional economic issues into your lessons?

I'm fairly well read about issues around the world. If I have a student say from Singapore, I'll ask them about it but also be able to ask them some relevant questions.

Q: How do you provide opportunities for learners to engage in discussions and ask questions?

I always ask questions and ask if there are questions :)

Q: What topics will be covered in the economics tuition?

Anything requested!
