Questions for You

Q: What is your approach to teaching writing, and how do you help students develop their writing skills?

When teaching writing skills I like to introduce it with examples. I will ask students what they see/can't see and guide them using scaffolded questions to why that is. Then, as initial practice I will use activities such as fill in the blanks, spot mistakes etc. where students can focus on that one single skill to ensure they gain a strong understanding. After that, we will move onto low stakes writing like forming sentences together or on whiteboards to practice implementing those things into our own work. Last but not least, we will move on to a structured writing task which I will provide prompt feeback on to the studentand then use that to decide the focus of our next lesson.

Q: How do you help students with grammar, spelling, and punctuation?

To help with grammar, spelling, and puctuation I introduce new rules or words individually. From there we will perform tasks centred around those rules and words to strengthen students knowledge and use. Once a students writing and work has comfortably implemented these things we can begin to introduce new rules and words. If a student struggles with a specific spelling or grammar rule we can go back together and look at it again until the student presents a deep and meaningful understanding.

Q: What is your approach to teaching reading, and how do you help students improve their reading comprehension skills?

My appraoch to reading is to share not only the importance but also instill a love and enjoyment from it. When it comes to the basic skill of reading I am very knowledgable across many programmes of phonics taught in the UK. I utilise these to build confidence and ability in my students so they can read and spell even the most difficult words and recongise their sight words. To improve reading comprehension skills I focus on 5 main aspects: 1. Rerieval - This is a students ability to locate and recall information in a text. 2. Inference - Understanding implied meaning, emotions, or motivations. 3. Prediction - Using clues to guess what might happen next. 4. Summarising and Sequencing - Identifying key pointa and ordering events. 5. Comparing and Contrasting - Noticing similarities and/or differences in characters, settings, or texts. Whilst some of these skills are more complex and difficult than others, I teach them all at all age ranges. To make this applicable to younger or older students I will carefully choose texts which are suited to their age and skill level to ensure it is challenging but achievable.

Q: How do you help students with literary analysis and critical thinking skills?

When working on literary analysis, I guide students to look beyond the surface of a text. We explore characters, themes, language choices, and structure in a way that feels accessible and engaging. I encourage students to ask questions, form their own opinions, and back them up with evidence from the text—skills that are not only vital for exams but also help them grow into thoughtful, curious readers. I break down complex ideas into manageable steps, modelling how to think critically and giving students the tools to build their own interpretations. Whether we're discussing a novel, poem, or play, I aim to make the process enjoyable and meaningful, helping students connect with literature and express their ideas with confidence.

Q: How do you help students with pronunciation and enunciation?

When it comes to pronunciation and enunciation, I focus on helping students speak clearly and confidently. I use fun, engaging activities like repetition games, phonics-based exercises, and tongue twisters to build accuracy and fluency. We break down tricky sounds and practise them in everyday words and sentences, always at a pace that suits the child. I also encourage students to listen closely to how words are spoken—through reading aloud, audio clips, and conversation—so they can develop a good ear for the rhythm and sounds of English. Most importantly, I create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable making mistakes and practising until they get it right.

Q: How do you help students with public speaking or presentation skills?

To help students with public speaking and presentation skills, I focus on building their confidence step by step. We work on clear speech, good posture, eye contact, and how to pace their words so they’re easy to understand. I also help them structure what they want to say, so they feel well-prepared and in control. We often practise through mini-presentations, storytelling, or role-play, depending on their age and comfort level. I give gentle, constructive feedback and lots of encouragement, helping them find their own voice and feel proud to speak in front of others—whether it’s in class, in an exam, or on stage.

Q: Can you explain complex English grammar rules in simpler terms for easier understanding?

English grammar can be tricky, but I break it down in a way that makes sense to students. I use clear explanations, real-life examples, and lots of practice to help them understand how grammar works—not just memorise the rules. Whether it’s verb tenses, sentence structure, or punctuation, we go step by step so they don’t feel overwhelmed. I also use visuals, colour-coding, and fun activities to make grammar more interactive and less intimidating. Most importantly, I connect grammar to their own writing and speaking, so they can see how it helps them communicate more clearly and confidently.

Q: How do you motivate students who struggle with the language?

For students who find English challenging, my goal is to make learning feel achievable and positive. I focus on building their confidence through small, steady steps and celebrating every bit of progress—no matter how small. I create a safe, supportive space where mistakes are part of the learning process, not something to fear. I adapt my lessons to suit each child’s pace and interests, using games, stories, and interactive activities to keep them engaged. By showing them that they can succeed with the right support and encouragement, I help them build both skills and self-belief. Over time, they not only improve their English, but also start to enjoy the journey.

Q: Are you familiar with the English curriculum and course requirements at my school?

Yes, I have experience with a range of English curriculums and school expectations. I've taught in diverse schools across the UK, where I worked with different schemes of work and exam boards, and I currently teach in a high-performing international school in Hong Kong. I’m familiar with both the UK National Curriculum and international frameworks like IB, and I understand how to adapt my teaching to meet different course requirements. Whether a student needs help with reading, writing, grammar, or preparing for assessments, I know how to target the skills they need for success in their specific school setting. I stay flexible and responsive, making sure my support always aligns with what they’re learning in class.

Q: How do you help students prepare for English exams and assignments?

When helping students prepare for English exams and assignments, I focus on building strong foundations and exam confidence. We go over key skills like planning, structuring responses, using evidence effectively, and answering the question clearly—whether it’s a piece of creative writing or a literary analysis. I guide students through past papers, model high-quality responses, and teach them how to manage their time and stay calm under pressure. I also help them understand what examiners are looking for and how to meet those expectations. Importantly, I make the process manageable and encouraging. With the right strategies and support, students often find that what once felt stressful becomes something they can handle with confidence.

Q: How do you ensure that students are actively engaged during tutoring sessions?

I keep tutoring sessions active, varied, and tailored to each student’s interests and learning style. Whether we’re playing a quick grammar game, discussing a book, or working through a writing task, I make sure there's plenty of interaction and opportunities for the student to think, respond, and take the lead. I also use questions, visuals, and real-life examples to keep things relevant and spark curiosity. Most importantly, I create a relaxed, encouraging space where students feel comfortable joining in, making mistakes, and having a go—because that’s when real learning happens.

Q: Can you help with test-taking strategies for English exams?

Yes, I help students build strong test-taking strategies so they can approach English exams with confidence and clarity. We focus on how to understand the question properly, plan their answers effectively, and manage their time well during the test. I also teach them techniques for staying calm under pressure, spotting key words, and avoiding common mistakes. We practise with real exam-style questions and I guide them in how to break down tasks step by step, so the process feels less overwhelming. With the right strategies in place, students often find they can show what they know much more clearly—and feel far less anxious about doing it.

Q: Are you willing to provide additional practice problems or resources for independent study?

Yes, I’m always happy to provide extra resources to support independent learning. Whether it’s practice questions, reading suggestions, grammar exercises, or writing prompts, I can tailor materials to suit each student’s level and learning goals. I want students to feel confident practising on their own between sessions, and I’m happy to guide them on what to focus on. These extra resources help reinforce what we cover during tutoring, give students more opportunities to improve, and help them take ownership of their learning in a supportive way.

Q: Are you able to provide assistance with English language certification exams, such as TOEFL or IELTS?

Yes, I can absolutely support students preparing for English language certification exams like TOEFL or IELTS. I’m experienced with the structure and expectations of both exams, and I help students build the specific skills they need—whether that’s reading comprehension, essay writing, speaking fluently, or managing their time effectively during the test. We’ll work through practice tasks, learn useful strategies for each section, and focus on clear, confident communication. I also provide feedback and tips tailored to each student’s strengths and areas for improvement, so they feel well-prepared and supported every step of the way.

Q: Can you provide guidance on choosing appropriate reading materials for improving English language skills?

Yes, I love helping students find the right reading materials to support their English development. I choose books, articles, and texts that match their reading level, interests, and goals—whether they’re building vocabulary, improving comprehension, or preparing for exams. For younger learners or those still building confidence, I recommend engaging stories with clear language and strong themes. For older or more advanced students, we might explore a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and literary texts to stretch their thinking and language skills. I also guide students on how to read actively—asking questions, making predictions, and thinking critically about what they’re reading—so they get the most out of each text.

Q: How do you help students with business English skills, such as writing professional emails or conducting meetings in English?

For students looking to improve their business English, I focus on real-world communication skills they can use with confidence. I help them develop clear, professional writing for emails, reports, and presentations, with attention to tone, structure, and key vocabulary. We also work on spoken English for meetings, phone calls, and networking—practising phrases, polite expressions, and how to sound natural and professional in different situations. I tailor lessons to their specific goals, whether they need help with formal writing, small talk, or leading a discussion. My aim is to make them feel confident, capable, and ready to use English effectively in any workplace setting.

Q: How do you help students with understanding and applying literary devices in English literature?

I help students understand literary devices by making them feel accessible and relevant. We explore what each device does—like how imagery creates mood, or how metaphors add deeper meaning—and look at real examples from texts they’re studying. I break things down with simple explanations, visuals, and comparisons so students can grasp how and why writers use these techniques. Then, we practise spotting devices in different texts and discussing their effect, gradually helping students apply this understanding in their own writing and analysis. Over time, they become more confident in recognising literary techniques and using them to support thoughtful, well-structured responses in classwork and exams.

Q: How do you encourage students to pursue their own writing interests in English?

I love supporting students in exploring their own writing interests, whether that’s stories, poetry, scripts, or journaling. I create space in our sessions for them to share their ideas, experiment with different styles, and develop their unique voice. I offer gentle guidance, helpful feedback, and fun prompts to spark creativity and keep them inspired. By celebrating their efforts and encouraging them to take creative risks, I help students see writing as something enjoyable and personal—not just something for exams. It’s amazing to watch their confidence grow when they realise their ideas matter and their words can have real impact.
