Questions for You

Q: What is your approach to teaching writing, and how do you help students develop their writing skills?

I have extensive experience writing in professional, academic, and technical settings. What sets me apart from other English tutors is my focus on practical English—the kind that supports students’ future academic and career goals. With a background in science, I’m equipped to teach not just general English, but also how English is used in scientific and academic contexts. Academic English has its own tone, structure, and style, and I help students master these differences to communicate effectively in their fields.

Q: How do you help students with grammar, spelling, and punctuation?

Grammar is one of the hardest parts of English to teach well. It needs just the right balance—not too strict, not too lenient. If it’s taught too rigidly, students may sound unnatural. If it’s too relaxed, their sentences may lose clarity. With my background in neurology and second language acquisition, I understand how people learn languages. I help students develop an instinctive feel for grammar, so they can use correct structures naturally, without having to consciously think through the rules every time. For spelling and punctuation, nothing works better than regular, active use of English. One unconventional but highly effective method I use—and recommend to my students—is reading Wikipedia articles on topics they are genuinely interested in. Unlike traditional textbooks, Wikipedia encourages exploration. You can go deeper into a subject by following links within the article, which leads to more reading, more vocabulary, and exposure to a wide range of sentence structures. It’s a method I personally use, and I’ve found it surprisingly effective for improving both comprehension and expression.

Q: What is your approach to teaching reading, and how do you help students improve their reading comprehension skills?

I believe reading should never feel like a chore. To build real reading comprehension skills, students need to read content they genuinely enjoy and are curious about. That’s why I take a practical and interest-driven approach. One method I personally use—and often recommend—is reading Wikipedia articles on topics students are passionate about. While this isn’t a conventional method most English tutors use, I’ve found it to be incredibly effective. Wikipedia allows readers to explore deeply and naturally. As students click through related articles, they’re not just learning more about a subject—they’re being exposed to real, complex sentence structures, academic vocabulary, and various ways information is presented. This kind of reading builds both language skills and knowledge at the same time. It’s a dynamic, immersive way to improve comprehension without relying solely on textbook exercises.

Q: How do you help students with literary analysis and critical thinking skills?

I teach literary analysis by helping students move beyond just “what the text says” to “why it says it that way.” I guide them to look at tone, structure, word choice, and context—then connect those elements to deeper meanings, author’s intention, and audience impact. I encourage students to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and see how the same piece of writing can be interpreted in multiple ways depending on perspective.

Q: How do you help students with pronunciation and enunciation?

Pronunciation is not always about right or wrong. It depends on the context. I teach students that the way a word is pronounced can vary depending on the region, accent, or situation. Some pronunciations are widely accepted across all contexts while others may be correct in one setting but sound unusual or unclear in another.

Q: How do you help students with public speaking or presentation skills?

Public speaking is one of the hardest skills to teach because it comes mainly from real-world experience and repetition. Even with enough practice, fear and lack of confidence can still be overwhelming on stage. What many people don’t realize is that it’s okay to make small mistakes during a presentation. The real skill is knowing how to quickly fix or improvise when things go wrong. Not every presentation will be perfect, but being confident that you can handle any unexpected moments gives your subconscious a sense of control and relief. This helps you stay calm and focused, allowing you to continue smoothly. I work with students to build this mindset and practice strategies for recovery, so they can speak confidently even when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Q: Can you explain complex English grammar rules in simpler terms for easier understanding?

I believe complex grammar rules exist for a reason and should not be oversimplified to the point where their full meaning is lost. My approach is to break down complex concepts into smaller, understandable parts first. This helps students build a clear foundation and grasp each element fully. Once they understand these simpler parts, they can then see how everything fits together to form the complete, more complex rule. This step-by-step understanding allows students to appreciate the full depth of the grammar without feeling overwhelmed.

Q: How do you motivate students who struggle with the language?

I always remind students that it is perfectly normal to struggle when learning a new language. Language learning is never easy, even if it sometimes appears effortless for others. Everyone goes through the same process of acquiring a new language, but what makes the difference is how each person perceives the challenge. By shifting their mindset to see difficulties as a natural and essential part of learning, students can stay motivated and keep progressing.

Q: Are you familiar with the English curriculum and course requirements at my school?

While I may not be fully familiar with your school’s specific English curriculum and course requirements yet, I am confident in my ability to quickly learn and adapt to them. I am committed to understanding your school’s expectations thoroughly to provide the most effective support for students.

Q: How do you help students prepare for English exams and assignments?

I like to start by having students complete a mock test or assignment on their own. This allows me to understand their current foundation and identify areas for improvement. From there, I tailor my guidance to build on what they already know rather than starting from scratch. For subjective tasks like IELTS Writing or school assignments, there is no single right or wrong approach. Different styles can be effective. My goal is to enhance the student’s existing skills and help them develop their own confident way of expressing ideas.

Q: How do you ensure that students are actively engaged during tutoring sessions?

I keep students actively engaged by making lessons interactive and relevant to their interests and goals. I use a variety of activities such as discussions, real-life examples, and practical exercises to keep their attention. I also encourage questions and regularly check their understanding to ensure they are following along. By creating a supportive and dynamic learning environment, students stay motivated and involved throughout the session.

Q: Can you help with test-taking strategies for English exams?

Yes, of course.

Q: Are you willing to provide additional practice problems or resources for independent study?

Yes, I can specifically help with the IELTS Academic exam. I have taken IELTS three times at both British Council and IDP centers, experienced in both paper-based and computer-based formats, including the UKVI Academic test. I am familiar with the exam structure and requirements.

Q: Are you able to provide assistance with English language certification exams, such as TOEFL or IELTS?

Yes, I can help with IELTS Academic specifically. I have taken IELTS three times in both British Council and IDP centers in both paper-based and computer-based as well as in UKVI center. I have experience with the exam formats.

Q: Can you provide guidance on choosing appropriate reading materials for improving English language skills?

I recommend students choose reading materials based on their interests to keep learning enjoyable and engaging. An unconventional but effective method I use is reading Wikipedia articles on topics they care about. This allows students to explore related subjects naturally, expanding vocabulary and comprehension in a meaningful context.

Q: How do you help students with business English skills, such as writing professional emails or conducting meetings in English?

I focus on teaching practical language skills that are directly useful in professional settings. For writing emails, I guide students on clear and polite language, proper structure, and common phrases used in business communication. When it comes to conducting meetings, I help students practice common expressions, turn-taking, and strategies to express ideas confidently and professionally. I tailor lessons to the specific needs and situations students face in their careers.

Q: How do you help students with understanding and applying literary devices in English literature?

I help students recognize common literary devices by explaining their meanings with simple examples and showing how they create effects in a text. Then, I guide students to identify these devices in the works they read and practice analyzing how they contribute to themes, tone, and meaning. I also encourage students to use literary devices in their own writing to deepen their understanding and creativity.

Q: How do you encourage students to pursue their own writing interests in English?

I encourage students to explore topics and styles that genuinely interest them. Writing becomes more meaningful and motivating when it reflects their own ideas and passions. I support them by providing guidance and feedback tailored to their unique voice, helping them develop confidence and creativity. By connecting writing tasks to their personal interests, students are more engaged and eager to improve.
