Reading is key to understanding proper English grammar. Writing short sentences is a good start, but as the student's vocabulary expands so does their ability to write paragraphs and then essays.
For grammar, students should start to understand the structure of a sentence with subject, and predicate. Then with enough understanding of nouns, verbs, adverbs, the student would need to go through exercises to identify correct and incorrect usages of subject, and predicate. This section would require a lot of time and investment as this is the core foundation of reading comprehension , and writing . For spelling, the student would need to read, and speak outloud words for correct pronunciation, and memorize a batch of words per week or month to build their vocabulary. When it comes to punctuation, this would require reading and understanding the context of the subject and tone of each exercise. There would be a focus on declarative statements, questions, and examples that would use exclamation points.
Reading various types of materials like poems, fiction, non-fiction, biographies would be beneficial to help a student have more practice with reading about different topics, and perspectives which would broaden a student's reading comprehension skills.
There are many exercises to help with literary analysis and critical thinking skills. The main one is to discuss a sentence or paragraph to see if the student is able to grasp the topic in question, and develop ideas and more context around that topic for further exploration .
Practice, and verbal dictation so students have confidence with public speaking. Many students are scared to make mistakes, so it is important for a tutor to guide a student in proper pronunciation .
Practice and feedback from a tutor would help with this. There could be mock presentations about a topic such as how does a volcano form lava? Or for more educated students, the student could give a presentation on how plants are powered from the sun.
An understanding and being able to identify where the subject, predicate is in a sentence is the foundation of English grammar , and including other features such as a verb, noun, adverb, and etc... act as links to form a complete thought.

This would require students to work on assignments, problem sets that will be covered in the exams. Then I would help students understand the questions and explain the answers using other examples.
I would have a timer on specific tasks so the student has a sense of urgency to complete certain tasks. Also this would require cooperation and communication with the parents about their participation.
