As an undergraduate Biochemistry student at Imperial College London, I gradually started to feel that Maths is undoubtedly a very important skill in multiple areas. It is very important for us to build a robust foundation early on in order to support higher education in the future. Working with Kumon as a tutor, during 2016-2017, has helped me consolidate my ambition of making a difference in others’ lives. I have taught students (age 5-16) in order to support them outside their curriculum. While I was trained to be efficient, systematic and responsible, it was inspiring to see my students’ excel in their education and I was fulfilled by their achievements. I believe that bringing happiness and satisfaction to others is a worthwhile pursuit. Throughout the year, I was able to apply my time-management skills due to a great degree of freedom offered by my instructor. I designed timeslots on a monthly basis and assigned tasks to my colleagues based on their ability. My experience made me realise that a unique teaching style and a personalised study plan for individuals are essential to effective tuition and I am able to design these based on the students’ ability and the difficulty of the course. And, to be honest, the struggle never stops, but it can be made challenging and rewarding! I am doing my Ph.D. in aerodynamics, which means I daily deal with mathematics and physics problems I need to solve to complete my doctorate. The mindset of the doctoral student allowed me to build resilience and creativity when approaching a problem we cannot solve, which is a mindset I try to teach all my students.
