I have been teaching Spanish for more than 15 years, and I speak 5 languages: in four I am fluent, and my Mandarin is intermediate level. A lot of us had learnt languages in the traditional way; grammar and rules, using memory and repetition. It is not totally a bad approach, but more can be done! The combination of grammar, important skills to ace the test, conversation and interesting cultural knowledge should be part of what a language course offers us.
