Questions for You

Q: What is your approach to teaching writing, and how do you help students develop their writing skills?

I encourage creative writing through understanding basic structures of different text types and I believe writing should be a tool for pupils to better express their ideas rather than just an exam skill set to have in their academic pursuit. Usually a lesson that focuses on writing will include topic exploration, mind-mapping, and grammar to ensure a comprehensive understanding.

Q: How do you help students with grammar, spelling, and punctuation?

I believe grammar is the foundation to a language, and therefore I do grammar practices with my pupils on a weekly basis to ensure they have a solid understanding of word forms and tenses. A grammar-focused lesson comprises of explanation (where I ask/ explain how a certain grammatical tool works), explore (apply knowledge through fun, interactive exercises), and proofreading (understand how the grammar is used correctly / incorrectly in a piece of text).

Q: What is your approach to teaching reading, and how do you help students improve their reading comprehension skills?

I will ask the pupil to choose their preferred text at the beginning of the lesson, and go through the plot / content of the text through role-playing, videos, and read-alouds to raise pupil's interest towars the text. I will also explain terminologies and vocabulary used wherever necessary to ensure pupils learn more than just "how to read".

Q: How do you help students with literary analysis and critical thinking skills?

This will be achieved through essay-writing and topic-based discussions.

Q: How do you help students with pronunciation and enunciation?

I use a combination of phonics-based techniques, listening and repetition exercises, and visual aids like phonetic spelling and mouth-position diagrams. I also incorporate reading aloud, minimal pairs practice, and tongue twisters to help students hear and produce the correct sounds clearly and confidently.

Q: How do you help students with public speaking or presentation skills?

I guide students through structured speaking activities, focusing on voice projection, clarity, pacing, body language, and eye contact. We practise short speeches and presentations in a supportive environment, often recording and reviewing their performances for self-reflection and improvement.

Q: Can you explain complex English grammar rules in simpler terms for easier understanding?

Absolutely. I break down grammar rules using real-life examples, visuals, and analogies. I avoid jargon and use scaffolding techniques to build understanding step-by-step, often reinforcing the rule through guided practice and relatable sentence construction.

Q: How do you motivate students who struggle with the language?

I create a positive, low-pressure environment and celebrate small wins to build confidence. I tailor materials to the student’s interests, set realistic goals, and provide consistent encouragement. I also show them how far they've come with regular progress reviews.

Q: Are you familiar with the English curriculum and course requirements at my school?

Yes, I make it a priority to understand the specific curriculum and learning outcomes at your school. I align my tutoring sessions with what’s being taught in class, including exam formats, reading lists, and assignment criteria.

Q: How do you help students prepare for English exams and assignments?

I review key topics, help with planning and drafting written responses, and go over past papers or sample questions. I also focus on time management, marking criteria, and common question types, ensuring students know exactly what is expected of them.

Q: How do you ensure that students are actively engaged during tutoring sessions?

I use a mix of interactive activities, including games, discussions, role-plays, and multimedia resources. I also encourage questions, provide choices in tasks, and adjust my approach to match each student’s preferred learning style.

Q: Can you help with test-taking strategies for English exams?

Yes. I teach strategies such as skimming and scanning for reading comprehension, planning and structuring written responses, and using process-of-elimination for multiple-choice questions. I also offer tips for managing time and reducing test anxiety.

Q: Are you willing to provide additional practice problems or resources for independent study?

Definitely. I can provide worksheets, reading materials, vocabulary lists, grammar exercises, and writing prompts tailored to the student’s needs. I also recommend apps and online tools that support continued learning between sessions.

Q: Are you able to provide assistance with English language certification exams, such as TOEFL or IELTS?

I took IELTS for academic English in 2021 and attained an overall score of 8.5, one of my pupils is also preparing for her IELTS in the summer.

Q: Can you provide guidance on choosing appropriate reading materials for improving English language skills?

I have a wide range of texts ready based on pupils' preferences, as I am aware that everyone has a unique taste when it comes to reading, and that finding the right piece for pupils can have a great impact on their willingness to learn and read.

Q: How do you help students with business English skills, such as writing professional emails or conducting meetings in English?

I work full time for a UK-based comapny and I communicate with my colleagues in English on a daily basis, so I am confident in teaching business English.

Q: How do you help students with understanding and applying literary devices in English literature?

As an English Literature graduate, I hold pride in simplifying and explaining literary devices to students through different text types, from poetry to dramas, to ensure my pupils are well-versed in poetic devices.

Q: How do you encourage students to pursue their own writing interests in English?

I encourage students to explore topics they’re passionate about by giving them choice in writing assignments—whether that’s fiction, journaling, poetry, reviews, or creative non-fiction. I provide prompts that spark imagination, create a safe space for sharing ideas, and celebrate their unique voice. I also introduce them to different genres and authors to inspire them, and give constructive, personalised feedback to help them develop confidence and skill in their writing.
