My name is Jessica, but many call me Mrs. Jay. Growing up in the community of Toronto, I have always loved engaging with children and helping them in education and personal development. I embarked on my private tutoring journey in my early 20s. I started by being a tutor to the neighborhood children, as well as children of friends and family members. Through word of mouth and referrals, my clientele grew expeditiously. My passion for teaching also grew tremendously as I met many new students, each with unique traits. Through many years of studying pedagogy, researching a variety of teaching/learning methods, and performing trials, I have allowed myself to develop a rich background and fulfillment in tutoring. My life finally had a purpose and that was to bring joy and achievement to the wonderful children and families in the learning environment. What brings me pure happiness is witnessing the exciting moment a child comprehends the learning material after having trouble with it. It is not just rewarding for the child when he/she becomes capable of understanding what is being taught after struggling in a certain area or subject, but it is also extremely rewarding for the tutor to witness the child develop mastery. Watching the proud faces and hearing phrases such as, “I get it now!” or “That’s not hard at all!” or “That was easier than I thought!” truly brings contentment. I enjoy teaching language (including reading and writing), math, science, social studies, test prep, and just about anything my students bring to me as homework help. Most importantly, I look forward to the feedback from parents. Beyond the beauty of seeing children learn and grow, hearing from parents on how much help I have been in their child’s personal growth and education has made me develop a sense of responsibility to the families I work with. The idea of not just being a tutor but an important member in the child’s life has changed my perspective about how the business I run makes a tremendous impact on my clients' lives more than my own. More than the improvements being a great reward for the hard work that was put in, the perspective of continuing to keep pushing forward to develop wisdom in every moment that presents itself is the main goal. Throughout my experience, a message I’d like to bring forward to parents is the awareness of childhood. Childhood is a very important stage in people’s lives where the experiences children have play a crucial role in the development of the brain and how they socially behave in their environment. Our childhood has a huge impact on who we become as adults. This is why it’s extremely important to give your child the best learning experiences during those years of their lives. As I reach a decade of my tutoring journey, I understand that beyond teaching, being a mentor can be empowering in touching the hearts and reaching the minds of growing souls.
