I use active learning, whereby the student and I work on problems together and engage with each other in a dynamic way to make meaning of mathematics. I do not lecture or use rote learning, but instead use discussion and the student's own problem solving abilities to develop strategies. I focus on conceptual development that sometimes require going back to understand simpler concepts before tackling more advanced ones.
I have used a number of online platforms such as Zoom and Teams to deliver lessons. I am confident with Canvas, Kahoot, Kami, Desmos, Quizziz and OneNote
Algebra, Graphs and Trigonometry. I subscribe to newsletters and belong to a community of educational practitioners that discuss mathematics education on a regular basis.
Phone calls, emails and face to face meetings.
Yes, where needed I provide additional materials based on learner needs.
Final checks such as exit tickets at the end of class, formative assessments during lessons. Homework should be reinforcement of concepts learnt and must be at a suitable level for the learner to work independently and experience success with it.
Before lessons begin, discussions with parents help identify the student’s learning style and specific needs. A baseline assessment and direct conversation with the student further clarify how they learn and approach tasks.
I have worked with students who have learning backlogs or other challenges. Depending on the student's needs I will adjust language level, use auditory or visual aids, adjust the learning materials, break down the tasks, give extra time, use technology, use multi sensory activities and continue to reflect on ways to adjust teaching to benefit the student.
