Questions for You

Q: What areas of Chemistry do you specialize in, and what level of Chemistry do you usually teach?

I specialize in Grade 11 and Grade 12 Physical Sciences (Chemistry), specifically focusing on preparing students for the transition into university-level STEM degrees. My core focus areas are Chemical Equilibrium, Stoichiometry, Acids and Bases, and Organic Chemistry. I am fully bilingual and provide tuition in both English and Afrikaans.

Q: What types of resources or technology do you use to support your Chemistry lessons?

I blend traditional high-tech study methods with physical reality. Digitally, I use an Honor Pad 9 to provide hyper-organized, visually engaging study plans and syllabus cheat sheets. Physically, I bring actual laboratory glassware (Erlenmeyer flasks, beakers) and safe consumables to visually demonstrate the chemistry we are calculating on the page

Q: How do you approach teaching Chemistry concepts to students who may struggle with Chemistry?

Chemistry often feels abstract and punishing to struggling students. I use a first-principles approach and the Socratic method. Instead of just handing them the answer, I guide them through targeted questioning to find where their logic broke down. If the math is confusing them, we stop and do a physical, safe demonstration to show them why the formula matters in the real world.

Q: Do you have experience with laboratory experiments, and how do you incorporate these into your Chemistry lessons?

Yes, as a Biochemistry major, practical lab work is my daily environment. High school practicals are often rushed or theoretical. I bring safe, scaled-down practicals to my sessions. Whether it's using universal indicators to show pH shifts during a titration or demonstrating gas laws, I make sure the student sees the science happening live. This multimodal approach encodes the knowledge far better than a textbook can

Q: What is your approach to teaching organic chemistry, and how do you make the subject engaging and accessible for students?

Organic chemistry is my specialty. Many students fail it because they try to rote-memorize every reaction. I teach it like a language and a puzzle. We focus heavily on understanding functional groups and why molecules behave the way they do based on their structure. Once a student understands the "grammar" of organic chemistry, the entire section becomes an easy, logical game rather than a memory test

Q: How do you help students prepare for chemistry competitions, college applications, or other academic opportunities in chemistry?

I approach tutoring as academic coaching. I don't just teach the high school syllabus; I teach the standard expected at the university level. Because I am currently in the BSc system, I help my students develop the rigorous study habits, scientific reasoning, and independent problem-solving skills required to not just get accepted into Medical or Engineering degrees, but to actually survive their first year.
