As an undergraduate Biochemistry student at Imperial College London, I gradually started to feel that Maths is undoubtedly a very important skill in multiple areas. It is very important for us to build a robust foundation early on in order to support higher education in the future. Working with Kumon as a tutor, during 2016-2017, has helped me consolidate my ambition of making a difference in others’ lives. I have taught students (age 5-16) in order to support them outside their curriculum. While I was trained to be efficient, systematic and responsible, it was inspiring to see my students’ excel in their education and I was fulfilled by their achievements. I believe that bringing happiness and satisfaction to others is a worthwhile pursuit. Throughout the year, I was able to apply my time-management skills due to a great degree of freedom offered by my instructor. I designed timeslots on a monthly basis and assigned tasks to my colleagues based on their ability. My experience made me realise that a unique teaching style and a personalised study plan for individuals are essential to effective tuition and I am able to design these based on the students’ ability and the difficulty of the course.
