Hello! My name is Sophia Skillman and I am from Northville, Michigan. I have 1 year of tutoring experience, working with high school and college students in their science courses. I personally understand the difficulties that education can cause students, because I too am a student myself. Throughout my early education, I struggled to keep up with my peers until I began utilizing methods that actually worked with my learning style. Since then, I have become a 4.0 student, and more importantly, have fallen in love with learning again. I have worked with children of many ages and worked under many different curricula. I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in New York, a Master’s in Education (Differentiated Instruction of At-Risk Learners) from Marian University in Wisconsin and a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Management (With Distinction) from Capella University in Minnesota. I taught Middle School Social Studies, English and health for 5 years and was an At-Risk Coordinator for 1 year under my Wisconsin Teaching license. I have also taught American History online to students in China. Currently, I am an online adjunct professor at Grand Canyon University in the College of Education, teaching graduate courses in the Teacher Education program. I am also one of two Clinical Practice Mentors in the College of Education working to integrate the edTPA (Pearson) assessment into the Student Teaching course. I have taught a variety of courses in the Program, including the Student Teaching course. I am also a Faculty Supervisor (Student Teacher Supervisor) for Grand Canyon University and for Western Governors University. I am engaging and thoughtful, and very good about providing holistic comments, advice and feedback to my students. I use my courses to encourage critical thinking and reflection. I also require differentiation and active learning plans from my students, using the current best practices to guide and mentor my pre-service teachers. I use educational technologies such as Zoom to supplement the course work with group or one on one instruction. I am the author of the book, The Prayers of David: 40 Conversations with the man after God’s own heart, published by the Museum of the Bible Devotional Series/Worthy Press, available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
