Fernando Basto I am an EFL teacher, with almost 27 years post-CELTA teaching experience in both Portugal, the UK,Malaysia and currently in Thailand. Throughout my time as a teacher I have continued to develop my skills by attending and taking part in staff development training. I have also had the responsibility for the content and design of some courses. I was a teacher at the British Council for 20 years. I am always endeavouring to improve my teaching skills and enjoy the challenge of making my lessons both an enjoyable and effective learning experience. During my time teaching EFL in Portugal and the UK I taught both young learners from 11 to 18 and adults from beginner to advanced and, as a result, understood the different approaches required. In addition, I always take different learning styles into account when planning my lessons, and adapt my materials accordingly. Indeed, I design a lot of my own materials, which I subsequently share with other teachers. Moreover, I have taught in one of the UK’s most prestigious summer schools for five summers, where I have won various teacher awards, including, ‘most helpful teacher’, and ‘most flexible teacher’. In fact, I was invited to come back second year as the senior teacher, who is responsible for providing administrative and pedagogical support and advice to the other teachers. In the fourth and fifth year, I was given the position of ADOS. My time teaching at this summer school has given me an invaluable insight into the different learning needs of various nationalities and especially Asian students who I have been teaching for the last three summers. Furthermore, I have an excellent rapport with my students and have had first-rate feedback from both students and line-managers. As a consequence, I have been specially requested, as a teacher, by students on several occasions. I am also a highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative individual, with a mature and responsible attitude.
