I was having a hard time finding an English tutor for my daughter who could help her reading skills and pronunciation. She is in her third year at a private school which teaches 50% Thai and 50% English. We tried several tutors but none could keep her focused and there was very little improvement. Everything changed when we found Mr. Steve. He made her time fun and very productive. His style works so well and he is patient, supportive and fun. I wish we found him 2 years ago!
I start with sentence structure, most used grammar and 'writing vocabulary'. Then I focus on how to effectively structure an outline, paragraph, main body, conclusion, etc.
I incorporate a lot of activities and games which help students remember and they are not as easily bored.
Reading comprehension is essential for literacy and development. I allow students to select the reading material and then after they read each chapter we discuss it to ensure they understand the content.
When I ask a student to do an analysis of a poem or short story or literary work, I provide them with a framework so that they can focus the analysis on they key elements of each piece.
I walk each student through the necessary steps needed to correctly identify each written word and the correct way to pronounce it. Phonics, syllables and where to put the stress on a word are covered in detail.
If a student needs help with presentation skills or public speaking, I teach them the basic elements of each and then practice with them to build their confidence.
I take this approach with everything I teach.
