I am a Danish guy with a PhD in Philosophy from The University of Hong Kong and two years of postdoc research experience from Oxford University. Prior to coming to Hong Kong, I attained Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Denmark in Sociology and European Studies. After completing my PhD, I wrote and published a book with Springer Nature based on my research, which won the British Ecological Society's Book of the Year award for 2023 and received other positive reviews. Writing has always been my greatest academic strength and enjoyment, so I am now trying to help students with their writing. My name is Mara Vranjkovic and I am a recent graduate from the University of Alberta where I received my bachelor's degree in English and Creative Writing. I believe that writing has the ability to teach us to think critically and develop our inner lives so that we have a stronger sense of self. It allows us to be witness to our own patterns of thought, and allows us to grow as we strive to question and evolve those patterns. Writing is a powerful tool that can be used to persuade, command, and convince, but it also has the ability to critique and question. The ability to write is a tool for the self, first and foremost, and is a doorway that allows us to access our own mind and be its own master. My goal with tutoring in writing is to help the student break down the mental blocks that may prevent them from having the courage to just start writing, to help those learn effective tricks for developing plans for essays or other types of writing, and to help students write with passion. I have many books on writing at my disposal which I will be using during my tutoring sessions, and I have attended seminars on writing and planning over my years at the University which I will also draw from. I am also understanding when it comes to an individual's methods of learning, and can adapt a lesson depending on their needs. I have experience with developing organizational startegies to help with time management when it comes to writing with deadlines as this is something I used to struggle with. I am located in Sturgeon County, but I can easily access all parts of St. Albert. If the student would be more comfortable with being tutored at the local library or even a coffee shop, that option is available.
