I’m currently a reporter, working at TIME Magazine. I have been working in journalism for the past four years. As a reporter, I spend a lot of time working on grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary. I attended Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism and earned my masters in 2016. I also went to Penn State University and got my bachelors degree. While an undergraduate at Penn State, I was a volunteer tutor with the Academics Assistant Program, where I tutored fellow college students in a variety of topics and course work.

Hello, my name is Shannon Holmes. I consider myself to be both a professional educator and an ice skating specialist, as, in addition to holding an English literature teaching degree, I coach all aspects of skating: speedskating, figure skating and hockey. My experiences in coaching help me to relate well to people of all ages, to assess ability, breakdown and scaffold skills to effectively raise the athlete or student to a level of extreme proficiency. I believe it deepens my skill as an educator. I have many goals that are part of my personal teaching philosophy, but the most important of these is to be able to motivate and engage my students in a love of reading, writing and literature. I will also strive to foster a lifelong love of learning, as that is a skill and attitude that will take students far into the future, beyond the boundaries of their academic careers. I believe that the ultimate goal of tutoring is to help my students gain skill continuously, until they need less and less assistance from me, so they can internalize these skills and be able to read and write, interpret text, and express themselves without further help. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential and tutoring is one avenue that allows me to do that! Working with schoolage students has been a longtime passion of mine.
