Questions for You

Q: What is your approach to teaching writing, and how do you help students develop their writing skills?

I encourage students to develop their own original ideas, and try to encourage an enjoyment of writing.

Q: How do you help students with grammar, spelling, and punctuation?

It helps if the students look at the overall idea being presented rather than just looking at each individual sentence. I encourage them to consider the overall meaning so they can better understand how various parts fit in. Doing this can give them a better understanding of the grammar.

Q: What is your approach to teaching reading, and how do you help students improve their reading comprehension skills?

I stop at regular intervals and ask questions to ensure the students understand what they are reading. Having discussions periodically about the content helps to encourage the students to have a better understanding of it.

Q: How do you help students with literary analysis and critical thinking skills?

In-depth discussions can help with this. Discussing not only what takes place in the text, but also having them come up with their own ideas and opinions about the text.

Q: How do you help students with pronunciation and enunciation?

I would practice with them and zero in on key pronounciation weaknesses. Having them read a story out loud, stopping them whenever they say a word incorrectly helps. I slso record it and send them the recording via Whatsapp so they can listen at home and practice.

Q: How do you help students with public speaking or presentation skills?

First, have them recite their entire presentation and take notes. Look for weak points, then have them present again, stopping them at each part that needs improvement. I'd make an audio recording of our session and send it to them so they can practice. If it's in person, I'd make a video recording as well to show them snd non-verbal things that could also be improved (posture, body movements, etc.)

Q: Can you explain complex English grammar rules in simpler terms for easier understanding?

Yes and I believe this is actually the best way. Grammar rules in English can be overwhelming for a non-native speaker.

Q: How do you motivate students who struggle with the language?

I try to develop a rapport with them so that even if they find the language difficult they hopefully will enjoy the time with me and wish to try harder.

Q: Are you familiar with the English curriculum and course requirements at my school?

I don't know which school. In general, I can't guarantee that I'm familiar with the exact cirriculum in any particular school. I believe a solid knowledge of the language is essential so that the student can enter any school with confidence.

Q: How do you help students prepare for English exams and assignments?

I ask them to send me a scan or photo of any particular exam or assignment they want help with so that I can help them with it and we can work on it together.

Q: How do you ensure that students are actively engaged during tutoring sessions?

Rapport is important here. I also try to have a variety of tasks for them to provide a bit of variety.

Q: Can you help with test-taking strategies for English exams?

Sure. Test taking strstegies apply regardless of which specific exsm it is.

Q: Are you willing to provide additional practice problems or resources for independent study?

I often do. Sometimes my students request additionsl times or sessions if they have something important to work on.

Q: Are you able to provide assistance with English language certification exams, such as TOEFL or IELTS?

I certainly can if the student has practice papers. For some exams I have old papers as well.

Q: Can you provide guidance on choosing appropriate reading materials for improving English language skills?

Sure. I can do better than that. I have a few hundred reader books at various levels which I've scanned which we can read together online if they like.

Q: How do you help students with business English skills, such as writing professional emails or conducting meetings in English?

I'd heve the student send me everything first and then go from there. For emails or letters I'd go over it with them to edit it. For meetings, we may practice it together.

Q: How do you help students with understanding and applying literary devices in English literature?

Again this is where an overall understanding of the story comes in.

Q: How do you encourage students to pursue their own writing interests in English?

I try to encourage an enjoyment of writing. If I'm successful, the student's own enjoyment if it will motivate them.
