I have lived in Asia for 15 years, mostly in Hong Kong, but also in Shanghai and Singapore. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign some years ago and have a background in finance. I started teaching English in Shanghai and Hong Kong part-time five years ago, teaching both business English for adults and children's lessons focused on conversational proficiency. I had a 30 yr career in futures and trading so I am quite familiar with finance and business protocol. I have an 11-year-old son who attended school in Shanghai and Hong Kong and is a primary Chinese Mandarin speaker, so I am familiar with the pronunciation and grammar issues for primary Chinese speakers learning English. I am focusing on using children's literature to teach listening, speaking, and reading comprehension. I find it easier to engage middle school students when using novels or other written material that can capture their attention. My approach involves getting students to participate by reading and listening to audiobooks and then discussing the stories and themes from the books. I can teach older students who have specific goals or curriculum.
