I have an 11-year-old son who attended school in Shanghai and Hong Kong and is a primary Chinese Mandarin speaker, so I am familiar with the pronunciation and grammar issues for primary Chinese speakers learning English. I am focusing on using children's literature to teach listening, speaking, and reading comprehension. I find it easier to engage middle school students when using novels or other written material that can capture their attention. My approach involves getting students to participate by reading and listening to audiobooks and then discussing the stories and themes from the books.
