Creative thinking and problem solving in Grade 10 Busin...
I begin by breaking down concepts into simple explanations, then use real-world examples to help students connect theory to practice. For example, when teaching marketing, I might ask students to analyse well-known brands and identify their target market, pricing strategies, and promotional techniques. This helps them understand how marketing works in real life. For finance and accounting-related topics, I guide students step-by-step through calculations and structured problem-solving. For instance, I work through financial statements with students, showing them exactly how to interpret data and answer exam-style questions accurately. When teaching management concepts, I use scenarios and case studies, such as workplace challenges or leadership styles, and ask students to apply their knowledge to solve problems. This builds critical thinking and prepares them for case study questions in exams. I also place a strong focus on exam preparation by using past papers and teaching students how to structure their answers effectively to meet marking guidelines. Throughout the process, I adapt my teaching style to each student’s needs, ensuring they not only understand the content but also gain confidence in applying it.
I start by breaking down key concepts such as ethical behaviour, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and sustainability in a clear and relatable way. I then use real-world examples of businesses to show both ethical and unethical practices, encouraging students to analyse the consequences of each. For example, I may present a scenario where a company prioritises profit over environmental or social responsibility, and ask students to evaluate the decision, its impact on stakeholders, and how it could have been handled differently. This helps them develop critical thinking and a deeper understanding of ethical decision-making. I also encourage discussion and reflection, allowing students to express their opinions and consider different perspectives. This creates a more engaging learning environment and helps them build their own sense of responsibility and values. To prepare students for exams, I guide them on how to structure answers to ethics-based questions, especially in case studies, ensuring they can apply concepts clearly and effectively. Ultimately, my goal is to help students not only succeed academically, but also develop an awareness of responsible business practices and their role in shaping a more ethical and sustainable future.
I use case studies and past exam questions that require learners to consider different business roles such as management, marketing, and finance. This helps them understand how decisions are made collaboratively in business environments. Where appropriate, I assign role-based tasks (e.g. manager, financial advisor, or marketing assistant) during problem-solving activities so learners can practise responsibility, decision-making, and leadership thinking aligned with topics like Business Roles and Business Environments. I also encourage learners to explain and justify their answers verbally, especially in essay and scenario questions, to build confidence, communication skills, and leadership in academic expression. Finally, I use feedback and reflection after tasks to help learners identify how they can improve their approach to working with others and making business decisions.
I use case studies based on real South African businesses and entrepreneurs so learners understand how theory applies in practice. I also incorporate examples of local companies and entrepreneurs when teaching topics like entrepreneurship, forms of ownership, and business environments. Where possible, I encourage learners to follow and research entrepreneurs and business leaders through credible online sources, interviews, and business talks, and then discuss their insights during lessons. I also guide learners on how they can network independently, for example through school entrepreneurship days, youth business programmes, online platforms like LinkedIn (for older learners), and community business events. The goal is to help learners see Business Studies as a real-world subject and to build awareness of opportunities beyond the classroom.
I use past Grade 10–12 exam questions to help learners understand question types, command verbs, and mark allocation. This includes structured practice on short questions, data response, and essay questions. I also teach learners how to plan and structure answers using clear business terminology, especially for higher-mark questions in Paper 1 and Paper 2. We practise breaking down case studies so they can identify key points quickly under exam conditions. In addition, I focus on time management by doing timed sections of past papers so learners become familiar with writing within exam limits. I will also provide targeted feedback to address content gaps and improve answering techniques, ensuring learners build both confidence and accuracy before exams.
I help learners develop presentation and communication skills by giving them regular opportunities to explain Business Studies content using correct CAPS terminology and key business concepts. They practise summarising case studies, answering essay questions verbally, and presenting short topic explanations, such as forms of ownership or business functions, in a clear and structured way. I focus on building their confidence by encouraging them to use key words from the syllabus and to express their ideas logically and simply. My feedback is focused on clarity, correct use of terminology, structure of answers, and how well they apply concepts to the question. I also guide them on how to improve fluency, organise their thoughts, and communicate more effectively.
I recommend extracurricular activities that help learners apply Business Studies content to real-life contexts and explore entrepreneurship beyond the classroom. This includes participating in school business clubs, entrepreneurship days, and mini-market or business simulation projects where learners can plan, budget, and “run” a small business. I also encourage learners to enter business plan competitions or youth entrepreneurship programmes, which help them apply topics like business functions, marketing, and financial management in practice. For further exposure, I guide learners to follow real businesses and entrepreneurs through interviews, podcasts, and credible online platforms, and to reflect on how these relate to what they learn in class. These activities help learners strengthen their understanding of the subject while building creativity, initiative, and real-world business awareness.
