Engaging English and Art Tutor in West LA
Hello, my name is Ali. I can be found in the West LA area with my boyfriend and two cats. I am currently a college student myself and am almost finished with my Associate of Arts degree in both English and Fine Art. I am an award-winning writer and honors student, as well as a two-time scholarship recipient. I want to utilize the skills I’ve learned through my education to support other students in their academic endeavors. Creativity and education are a huge part of my life, and I have always enjoyed sharing that inspiration with others. One of my favourite ways of combining the two disciplines is to tutor students. My tutoring approach is based on the belief that each person has specific goals and a unique learning style. My intent is to create enthusiasm and confidence around learning in an engaging way. I hope that the students I work with feel compelled to overcome challenging material with my help. I will take the time to learn about each individual and their aspirations, and adapt my tutoring style according to each student’s varying needs.

Medieval Surgeon/Historian (Special Bonus Leeches)
Do you need someone to ignite your child's interest in learning? I taught European History at the university level as well as in high school so I understand what it takes to make the transition from one to the other. My method of tutoring focuses on analyzing texts as opposed to the brute memorization of facts. Because I have a background in a lot of different topics, I tend to allow lessons to move over a wide range of fields, depending on what interests the student. This serves to engage a variety of students on their terms. In a sense, what I offer is a theatrical performance in which I open up my inner thinking process about a given topic and, in turn, invite students to join in this performance. I have in the past conducted my classes as book clubs in which students voted for books to read and I worked my lessons around these books. I believe that this method can be particularly valuable for the smaller more intimate setting of tutoring. Students on the autism spectrum, in particular, have benefited, as it allows their particular set of interests to set the agenda. Ultimately, I like to see myself as a living resource that students can use to help them connect to the world of books and of private reading where the true process of education lies. My favorite clients are members of a large family, ranging in age from toddler to teen. I come in for several hours a week to help with whatever is needed. That usually means starting the evening reading to the younger kids. I have a child on each knee while I use one hand to hold a book and my second hand to balance a third kid on top of my head. By the end of the evening, I am talking history and politics with the older kids. In either role, I serve as a reading facilitator, encouraging people to push themselves to read more, read widely and read things that will challenge them intellectually and emotionally. If this is the kind of entertaining and enlightening experience you want to bring to your kids, contact me.
