I’m Greis Torres, a New York City based reporter who has also dabbed her feet a little in the PR and democratic education worlds. I graduated Cum Laude in May 2019 with a B.A. in Journalism and a minor in Anthropology from CUNY York College, where I was heavily involved in the student newspaper. My work experience ranges from interning at a democratic school, working in CUNY York College’s official student newspaper, Pandora’s Box, and radio station, YC Radio, doing investigative reporting in NYC and interning at a public relations and marketing agency where I worked closely with the hospitality account executive. Throughout my college career, I published over 30 articles in the official newspaper of my school where I became an editor and later, the editor-in-chief. I have experience writing features, spot news and in-depth stories. Outside of Pandora’s Box, I have also published stories in City Limits, Campus News and WhoWhatWhy. A prominent in-depth story I reported on when I was the EIC of Pandora’s Box about a deal between CUNY York College and Royal Waste, a waste and recycle hauling company, rendered me a finalist for the Professional Society of Journalists Mark of Excellence In-Depth reporting (small) region 1. Besides telling stories I’m also passionate about culture, languages (I am fluent both in Spanish and English, a beginner in French and would love to learn Finnish), singing, cooking and photography.

I have extensive experience teaching all the GED subjects both in a formal classroom setting and in one on one tutoring sessions. I am in the process of getting certified to teach in NYS high schools. Presently. I teach Regents Chemistry and Earth Science at a charter high school in the Bronx. My core belief is that even students who are struggling, know far more than they believe. My approach is to help students realize their own abilities rather than give them the answers. I focus on building students’ confidence while developing strong relationships with my students. By so doing, I can tell in a few sessions the difference between a student’s lack of ability and lack of confidence. The two issues must be dealt with simultaneously. I have been a teacher and tutor for over 12 years. I have taught adults, youth and children, and I realize that those who struggle have certain factors in common. More often than not, they have entrenched misconceptions coupled with a confidence issues. My best experiences in teaching has been seeing students change habits that have hindered their full abilities. I have had success tutoring Regents chemistry, earth science and geometry. Additionally, I have prepared students for GED, TASC, SAT and ACT exams.

I currently a resident of Woodside, Queen where their is an eclectic mix of Spanish, Chinese and residents from other parts of Asia. My aim is to give you the tools capable of writing papers for the college level and beyond and have command of English syntax system so that all your papers will be A's. I was not afforded this opportunity, before college, so my goal is have you prepared for your next step in life. Good luck.

I viscerally feel that I will be effective in raising student achievement in the math field. Over the years teaching math, I have learnt to make it fun by making comparisons with the real world. Teaching math is more of an art rather than a science and making this art fun and people-friendly can make a difference in one’s perception of math whether the individual will detest or appreciate math.
