My name is Dr. James, and I have worked as a college professor and, more recently, as a freelance writer, editor, and tutor. I was born in Jersey City, grew up in Bergen County, and moved to Philadelphia where I attended the University of Pennsylvania (earning a B.A. in Philosophy) and Temple University, receiving an M.F.A. in Screenwriting. Subsequently, I moved to New York City where I lived for 16 years and earned my Ph.D. in American Studies from NYU. As an American Studies Ph.D., I have over twenty years of college/university teaching experience in subjects ranging from English Composition, Business Writing, American History, and Literature. I am a published scholarly writer and freelance writer. I am also a passionate creative writer, engaged in writing short and long fiction as well as poetry. Furthermore, I work as a freelance editor and writer, possessing expert skills in grammar, punctuation, and proofreading. For the last 10 years, I have tutored and mentored students in their English writing, speaking, and reading skills. I also teach History and Philosophy to small groups of advanced students.

I operated and taught Math and Reading at Kumon for 12 years during which I also raised two amazing sons who are computer engineers. They credit supplemental learning for their success in school. I taught young students and adult students in Nicaragua at a bi-lingual school and also learned Spanish myself! I have taught and currently teach English online to students of all ages from China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Brazil, India, and Korea. I have traveled to India, Iceland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. I speak Hindi fluently and Spanish at the beginner level. I am looking forward to meeting you! Due to the variety of teachers and mentors I have had, I developed techniques to internalize information. This helped me learn faster in my personal life, and helped me impart knowledge onto others. My students ranged from my MBA cohort to high school students. Each student I took time with to help them understand the fundamentals of the subject areas and then build competence and confidence toward academic success. Anza has spent five years working consistently as both a tutor and a teaching assistant. She began her professional career as a tutor and teaching assistant at Sam Hughes Elementary School in Arizona. She loved this job as much as both the teachers and students enjoyed having her, and continued on at this location for 4 years. Upon graduation from the University of Arizona (where she also worked as a preceptor in college courses), Anza began a new job at Kumon Math and Reading Center in Los Angeles, quickly moving up the ranks to become a lead teacher and administrative assistant working with students from pre-school to 4th grade. Anza now lives in New York City and is hoping to continue the work she is so passionate about. While working with Anza, students can expect an environment where questions are encouraged and getting something wrong only means you are one step closer to understanding how to get it right. Learning should not be a stressful pursuit of grades, but an opportunity to know more about the world and ourselves. Hi all! My name is Emily - I'm an MFA student in an interactive media arts program in Brooklyn with an MA in Theatre History and Criticism and undergraduate degrees in Comparative Literature and French. I am active in the arts scene in New York and in the broader academic scene in the states, having presented at conferences along the East Coast. I am an experienced writer in all types of different styles and am comfortable with both creative and professional content, so I would love to help with essays or creative writing assignments (I am weirdly excited by new projects of that kind). Additionally, I do SAT / GRE (etc.) verbal sections, as I scored well but understand how foreign these tests can feel at times. I'm also an experienced English as second (or third or fourth) language teacher and would be interested in working with students in this context, especially French speakers as I am an advanced learner French myself. I am a NYC based director, producer and educator! I study at New York University, where I will graduate with a degree in Educational Theatre. Finding a tutor is no easy feat. Coming from someone who had a different learning style than many of my classmates, I always thought it would be impossible to find someone who could tutor me, so I never tried, but I should have. I absolutely commend you for getting this far and searching for someone who can help you out and help you gain more confidence in the subject that you've been struggling in. For the past ten years, I've been coaching, mentoring, and tutoring students, friends, and children I've babysat for. Throughout my time, I've found three important qualities that I think are essential for tutoring: dedication, patience, and understanding. Each individual has a different background, personality, and learning style. In order for me to give my best to each student, I take the time to get to know them--truly learning what they need and want to get out of each session.
