I know what you need to know to succeed at the next level.
I have been told by many students that I make learning fun. I appreciate that they feel that way but I don't really agree. I think learning itself is fun and I just help students to see that. I take great satisfaction in watching students feel proud of themselves as they master a topic that had been challenging for them. I want students to see the joy they can take in learning. After having taught at the collegiate level for over 20 years (I taught philosophy, religious studies, humanities, and English), at, among other places, one of the best honors colleges in the country (I taught numerous students who went on to become Rhodes Scholars), I taught mathematics at the secondary level for the last three years. Now I want to be a stay-at-home dad while still keeping a foot in education, since I truly have a passion for it and have devoted my professional life to it. I enjoy working with all students but I especially want to encourage athletes. I taught many student athletes (some who have gone on to the NFL) and I was also the long distance track coach at my previous school and enjoy running myself. I appreciate the discipline it takes to excel in athletics and academics.

I make Math interesting, accessible and useful.
I earned a masters in teaching mathematics at the secondary level in 2018, specializing in diversifying instruction to meet diverse learning needs. If you hate math, I'm your teacher. I have an extensive background in art, music, physics and many unusual life experiences that allow me to relate the many ways that math makes life more beautiful, more powerful, and more amazing! Math has a bad reputation but in my experience, the right attitude, the right teacher, and the right applications make all the difference. I teach solving systems of linear equations by racing remote controlled cars, quadratic equations with catapults, statistics with cookie stacking contests, and geometry with patterns and design. Mathematics is the language of the universe, and once you learn to speak it, you will begin to see it everywhere. Becoming better at math won't only raise your grades, either; learning how to use logic, solve problems, balance equations, draw angles and connect ideas will strengthen your mind in general and make you a better thinker overall. Like working out in a gym makes your whole body stronger, practicing mathematics will make your whole brain smarter and more efficient, whether or not you think you'll ever use it in "real life." You don't go to the gym to become an awesome leg-lifter; but strengthening your legs makes you better at everything that uses legs. Likewise, learning math strengthens your brain and makes you better at everything that uses it! I have a soft spot for people with math anxiety, learning challenges, behavioral issues, and diverse needs. There are many, many ways to teach and learn math, but most schools are limited to a few spread across a large class. In tutoring, I can tailor my teaching to meet your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

👉 How do I improve my problem-solving skills in Mathematics?

Improving problem-solving skills in Mathematics requires practice, patience, and persistence. Try solving problems on a regular basis, seeking out challenging problems, breaking down complex problems into smaller steps, and seeking help from a teacher or tutor when needed. Additionally, studying the solutions to similar problems and understanding the reasoning behind them can also be helpful.

👉 What is the best approach for studying and retaining mathematical concepts?

Improving problem-solving skills in Mathematics requires practice, patience, and persistence. Try solving problems on a regular basis, seeking out challenging problems, breaking down complex problems into smaller steps, and seeking help from a teacher or tutor when needed. Additionally, studying the solutions to similar problems and understanding the reasoning behind them can also be helpful.

👉 How can I prepare for mathematical exams and assessments?

Preparing for mathematical exams and assessments involves reviewing and practicing key concepts, solving sample problems, and seeking help from teachers or tutors. It is also important to manage time effectively during exams and to understand the format and type of questions that will be asked.

👉 What are the common mistakes made by students while learning Mathematics and how can they be avoided?

Common mistakes made by students while learning Mathematics include not paying attention to details, rushing through problems, not checking work, and not seeking help when needed. These mistakes can be avoided by being attentive, taking time to understand the problem, double-checking work, and asking for assistance when needed.

👉 How can I overcome a fear or dislike of Mathematics?

Overcoming a fear or dislike of Mathematics requires a change in mindset and attitude. This can be achieved by breaking down complex problems into smaller parts, seeking help from teachers or tutors, finding real-life applications of mathematical concepts, and focusing on understanding the concepts rather than just getting the right answer.

👉 What are the career opportunities for someone with a strong foundation in Mathematics?

A strong foundation in Mathematics can lead to a variety of career opportunities, including actuarial science, finance, data analysis, computer science, engineering, and education. Mathematics is also a valuable skill in many other fields, such as physics, economics, and statistics.

👉 Why is geometry important for students to learn?

Geometry not only provides a foundation for understanding higher-level maths, but it also helps develop problem-solving skills and logical reasoning.

Learning geometry can help students better understand their surroundings. By grasping the basics of angles, points, lines and planes, they can make more sense of the world around them. Geometry can also help foster an appreciation for nature; by learning how shapes come together to form symmetrical patterns or structures found in nature, students can better understand our environment.

In sum, numerous benefits come with learning geometry—beyond just passing tests!

👉 How can students apply geometry concepts to real-world scenarios?

By understanding the basics of shape and measurement, students will better grasp how to apply geometry principles in various contexts. Geometric formulas can calculate the area and volume of shapes like triangles, rectangles, cones, and cylinders, which are vital for any construction project or home improvement task. With these calculations, students can accurately measure distances and angles when building things with wood and other materials or designing a room layout.

👉 How can teachers make geometry learning more engaging for students?

To make geometry learning more engaging and successful, teachers must provide an interactive environment that enables students to use their logical thinking skills through problem-solving.

The first step for teachers is to create activities that involve the use of multiple senses. For example, making models from everyday objects or drawing diagrams can help students better visualise geometric shapes and understand their properties. Additionally, spatial awareness activities such as mazes or puzzles are great options for helping students practise orienting objects in space. Teachers can also invite guest speakers from fields such as architecture or engineering who can provide insight into the real-life applications of geometry principles. This will help motivate students to see how these lessons apply outside the classroom setting.
